Spreadsheets are terrible calendar restore formats and excellent “what happened last year” formats. Use them on purpose—and say the difference out loud so you do not skip the backups you still need.

Before you delete an old calendar
Before deleting an old client calendar, you want a durable snapshot of last year’s work-related events you can still read in five years without importing anything.
ICS is awkward for humans; live history is fragile
ICS is great for import, awkward for humans. Leaving history only in a live calendar is one sync accident away from gone.
Readable snapshot on purpose
Export key ranges to XLSX/CSV for archives, open the file once, then clean the live calendar. Keep true calendar backups separately if you ever need events as events again.

Be honest about the format
An Excel file will not rebuild invites, attachments, and every calendar property. It will preserve dates, times, titles, and durations you can filter. Say that out loud so you do not skip ICS or iCloud backups you still need for restore.
Export before delete—always
The order is non-negotiable. Export, open the file, then clean the live calendar. Reverse order is how people learn regret, and regret does not restore events.
Chunk the history
Year or quarter files are easier to validate than one giant dump. Name them with ranges so future you can find March without opening everything and guessing.
Where I store these files
Not only Downloads. A dated folder on a drive I control, plus a second copy somewhere that is not the same laptop. Archives fail the same way photos fail: one disk, one coffee spill.

Can I back up Apple Calendar to Excel?
You can export selected events to Excel as a readable archive. That is not the same as an ICS restore backup of the full calendar database.
